After months of rumors about its demise, Disney has closed its indie studio Miramax according to founder Harvey Weinstein.

The arthouse movie studio, started by Harvey and his brother Bob Weinstein over 30 years ago and then bought by Disney, is closing its New York and Los Angeles offices and laying off 80 employees, according to an interview on TheWrap.com.

Miramax made Peter Jackson's film Heavenly Creatures in 1994 and the Weinstein brothers had a strong relationship with the Kiwi director.

Disney had already taken steps to downsize Miramax by reducing the number of films the label released annually.

The loss of Miramax is a blow for the independent film industry, which has been shrinking as other Hollywood studios reduce their indie divisions.

Other hits Miramax produced or distributed were Pulp Fiction, Sex, Lies and Videotape, The English Patient, Chicago and Shakespeare in Love.

"I'm feeling very nostalgic right now," Harvey Weinstein told TheWrap.com. "I know the movies made on my and my brother Bob's watch will live on."

Actors become actors because they loved entertaining their family by putting on the lampshade and dancing around as a kid, ... That's not my personality. For me, the fun part of making movies is seeing it as a director sees it. I like the architecture of movies. I like knowing what's coming and working to set that up.”
